FOUNDATION & HISTORY  
KTU Ship Machinery Management Engineering Department was established in 2016 with the aim of educating qualified Oceangoing Chief Engineers in line with the future and goals of the maritime industry, for the needs of the world's maritime trade fleets, especially our country. The Department of Ship Machinery Management Engineering started education for the first time in the 2021-2022 academic calendar, with a quota of 30 students. In the continuation of the compulsory preparatory class, the program type of undergraduate courses is 30% English. English preparatory class is conducted by the School of Foreign Languages ??at the Kanuni (Central) Campus of Karadeniz Technical University. 30% of undergraduate courses are taught in English. Theoretical lessons are given in the classrooms of KTU Sürmene Faculty of Marine Sciences Çamburnu Campus, and applied lessons are given in the workshops and laboratories of KTÜ Sürmene Faculty of Marine Sciences Muammer Dereli Campus and KTÜ Sürmene Abdullah Kanca Vocational School. Students who come with the central placement system are also subjected to an interview and a physical adequacy test. Education in the department is carried out in accordance with maritime customs and traditions, and students are also obliged to wear uniforms.
The course curriculum of the department is based on the Regulation on Seafarers and Pilots, published in the Official Gazette dated 10/2/2018 and numbered 30328, taking into account the International Convention on the Standards of Seafarers' Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW-78), dated 12/02/2018 and 12159. Seafarers and Pilots Training and Exam Directive published in the Official Gazette No. 26079, Regulation on the Principles of Maritime Training Inspection and Quality Standards published in the Official Gazette dated 13.02.2006 and numbered 26501 It has been prepared in accordance with the Regulation on Training Courses.

RECOGNATION of PRIOR LEARNING  
The "Directive on Recognition of Prior Learning", Senate Decision No. 340 issued on July 28, 2023, has been accepted and entered into force regarding the students registered in all programs of Karadeniz Technical University to determine the principles to be followed for the recognition, crediting, and adaptation of the achievements acquired by the students at non-university institutions.

In this Directive,

- recognition of knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired with special interest through an exemption exam to be substituted as program courses,
- recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio evaluation to be substituted as program courses,
- and the crediting of certificates received from accredited institutions regarding students' special interests are covered.

Announcements of courses included in the scope of recognition of prior learning, applications, and evaluation will be made on the dates specified in the academic calendar. Recognition of prior learning will offer numerous benefits to our students and employers. For our students, increasing professional development and mobility in the labour market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, providing early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, encouraging learning, and increasing the student's motivation and self-confidence can be counted among the benefits of recognition of prior learning. From the employers' perspectives, it will contribute to satisfying skill or competence deficiencies in the workplace, reducing the time employees spend outside the workplace for training purposes, and thus using resources more efficiently.
