The aim of the course:
Discussions on the definition of democracy still continue today. The aim of this course is to give basic information about the empirical or realistic theories and practices which explain both the normative democracy theories which are necessary and the ones which are emphasized and the applications of democracy in different countries in this framework.

Contents of the Course
Our course is an introduction to the old and new theories of democracy and there are four basic sections. In the first chapter, Aristotle, Montesquieu, J.J., who pioneered modern democratic theories. Rousseau, Alexis de Tocqueville, John Stuart Mill and Karl Marx democracy theories. In the second part, the main normative and empirical theories of modern democracy such as Max Weber, Joseph Schumpeter, pluralistic democracy, social democracy, participatory democracy, critical democracy, integrative democracy are discussed. The third and fourth sections, based on comparative democracy research, process the strengths and weaknesses of different democracy types, as well as their common and distinct aspects. It is also discussed how democratic the current democratic state governments are, the socio-economic conditions of the democratic process and democratic transitions from the authoritarian state.
