The aim of the course:
To establish an understanding on the technologies of Computer aided mapping, and on the concepts of vector and raster data representations and related data structures.

Contents of the Course
Computer aided mapping (CAM) technology; general concepts. Hardware for CAM; Computer systems, software and hardware subsystems, hardcopy output devices. Computer networks. Graphical output devices. Raster and vector display system concepts; Resolution, scaling, colour display systems. Data conversion; Manual, semi and full automated digitizing. Raster-to-vector conversion. General purpose data structures. File structures. Sequential and random access file organizations. Vector data structures; topologic data structures. Vector data formats. Raster data structures. Quad trees. Raster data formats. Comparing raster and vector data structures. Spatial data interchange. Digital Elevation Models. Map production in CAM; Cartographic output design and symbolization.
