FOUNDATION & HISTORY  
Doctorate education started in 2018 at the Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering Department, which is within the body of the Graduate Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences. First students were admitted to the Department in the Spring semester of the 2017-2018 academic year.

MODE of STUDY  
Full Time
ADMISSION & REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS  
To apply to doctoral programs with a master's degree with thesis, undergraduate and graduate grades must be at least 2.00 according to the 4-point system or 53.33 according to the 100-point system, and a minimum ALES score of 55 is required.

To apply to doctoral programs with a bachelor's degree, undergraduate grades must be at least 3.20 according to the 4-point system or 81.33 according to the 100-point system, and a minimum ALES score of 80 is required.
OBJECTIVE of THE PROGRAMME  
The Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering Department covers research and development in shipping, port services, maritime policies and issues related to the working conditions of seafarers.
RECOGNATION of PRIOR LEARNING  
The "Directive on Recognition of Prior Learning", Senate Decision No. 340 issued on July 28, 2023, has been accepted and entered into force regarding the students registered in all programs of Karadeniz Technical University to determine the principles to be followed for the recognition, crediting, and adaptation of the achievements acquired by the students at non-university institutions.



In this Directive,



- recognition of knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired with special interest through an exemption exam to be substituted as program courses,

- recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio evaluation to be substituted as program courses,

- and the crediting of certificates received from accredited institutions regarding students' special interests are covered.


Announcements of courses included in the scope of recognition of prior learning, applications, and evaluation will be made on the dates specified in the academic calendar.
Recognition of prior learning will offer numerous benefits to our students and employers. For our students, increasing professional development and mobility in the labour market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, providing early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, encouraging learning, and increasing the student's motivation and self-confidence can be counted among the benefits of recognition of prior learning. From the employers' perspectives, it will contribute to satisfying skill or competence deficiencies in the workplace, reducing the time employees spend outside the workplace for training purposes, and thus using resources more efficiently.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS and REGULATIONS  
Requirements to be met by students in order to obtain a doctorate degree in Maritime Transport Management Engineering; a) To take a 21-credit (60 ECTS equivalent) course and pass at least BB degree, b) To have at least 3.0 weighted average over 4.0, c) To be successful by preparing a doctoral thesis and defencing it in front of the jury.
KTU Graduate Education Regulations
EXAMINATION, ASSESSMENT and GRADING REGULATIONS  
Students are subjected to midterm exam, midterm study (project, seminar, quiz, homework, or a second midterm exam) and final exam for each course. The contribution of the midterm to the success grade is 30%, the contribution of the semester work is 20% and the contribution of the final exam is 50%. All exams are evaluated over 100 points. Students who take one of the letter grades (AA), (BA) or (BB) from the doctorate courses are considered as successful.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS  
Those who take at least 21 credits (60 ECTS equivalent) of the courses in the graduate programs of the department or other related departments; successfully completing all courses; Achieving a minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.00; Students who successfully defend the thesis they have prepared in a related field are awarded a Doctorate diploma in Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILES of GRADUATES  
Graduates from the Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering Department can be employed in the maritime sector's port, coastal management and maritime companies. In addition, there are working areas in public institutions such as the Undersecretariat for Maritime Affairs, General Directorate of Coastal Safety, and the Ministry of Environment.

DEPARTMENTAL FACILITIES : 
Maritime Transportation and Management Engineer department students' have access to simulator systems equipped with the latest technology (Bridge, ARPA radar, tanker, engine room, container and GMDSS communication simulator), navigational, safety at sea, shipping, oil pollution, first aid and medical care, maritime, in addition to its chemistry and computer laboratories, there is a fire training unit belonging to the Marine Transportation Management Engineering Department and a ship leaving system at Çamburnu Campus, consisting of a ship leaving system. In addition, our campus has a modern dormitory building that meets the accommodation needs of students and an indoor gymnasium where students can perform sports activities.
