The aim of the course:
The objective of this course is to develop the fundamentals and applications of separation methods, to enable students to evaluate metallurgical balances and separation efficiency in mineral processing applications and to provide students with an understanding of how a minerals processing flowsheet is developed using examples from industry.

Learning OutcomesCTPOTOA
Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :
LO - 1 : describe the physical properties of mineral and be able explain its relation to the processing methods2,51,4,
LO - 2 : apply various techniques in enrichment of ores2,51,4,
LO - 3 : evaluate the results of a process data2,51,4,
LO - 4 : design basic mineral processing scheme2,5
CTPO : Contribution to programme outcomes, TOA :Type of assessment (1: written exam, 2: Oral exam, 3: Homework assignment, 4: Laboratory exercise/exam, 5: Seminar / presentation, 6: Term paper), LO : Learning Outcome

Contents of the Course
Introduction to separation processes. Liberation of minerals. Characteristic properties of minerals leading to their separation. Methods of separation, principles and equipment used in the beneficiation processes such as ore sorting, gravity concentration, heavy medium separation, magnetic and electrostatic separation. New developments in separation processes: Centrifugal gravity separation, super conducting magnetic separation, eddy current separators and application in waste treatment. Gravity concentration; dense medium separation, jigs, spirals, cones, tables and centrifugal separators. Magnetic and high tension separation; design and application of low and high intensity magnetic separators. High tension separators -operation and application. Mineral processing laboratory demonstrations for separation processes and equipments.
