The aim of the course:
Having the thorough knowledge about * the classification of rock excavation methods and underground structures * the principles of conventional excavation methods * history and recent trends of mechanical excavation * excavation machines used in mining and tunnelling * the performance prediction models * the principles of rock cuttng mechanics * the phenomenology of the rock cutting with cutting tools

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :
LO - 1 : learn and understand the fundamental concepts of excavation of rock and coal4,5
LO - 2 : have a thorough knowledge about rock cutting tools and machines and choose appropriate machine and tool for a relevant formation4,5
LO - 3 : have knowledge about rock cutting theories and with the aid of these theories, they will be able to calculate the tool forces4,5
LO - 4 : design the cutterheads with the aid of cutting theories4,5
CTPO : Contribution to programme outcomes, TOA :Type of assessment (1: written exam, 2: Oral exam, 3: Homework assignment, 4: Laboratory exercise/exam, 5: Seminar / presentation, 6: Term paper), LO : Learning Outcome

 
Contents of the Course
History of mechanical excavation, Theoretical rock cutting mechanics, Rock mechanics and rock cutting mechanics tests, Conventional excavation methods, Field investigations, Roadheaders, Tunnel boring machines, Coal cutting machines, Raise and shaft boring machines, Hydraulic hammers, Mechanical excavators in openpit mining, New technologies, Performance prediction of excavation machines.
