Emphasis is placed on encouraging students to learn the surface mining by observing and doing: they conduct case studies, visit mines, see films, using computer software, solve problems, compile mining method notebooks, and design open pit mining systems. |

Basic concept in surface mining, ore reserve estimates, pit planning and design, production planning, bench geometry, stripping ratios and pit limits, drainage of ground water, soft and hard rock mining, equipment and system selection, sequence of development, blasting and rock fragmentation, loading and hauling of materials, cycle of operations, slope stability, mine waste management, mine reclamation. |
