The aim of the course:
The main goal of this course is to give useful knowledge about biological and non-biological harmful agents that degrade wood from raw material stage to end-use area, hence restrict usage and decrease value of economical/aesthetics/functional of wood material. In addition, it is emphasised that effect mechanisms of biological harmful agents such as bacteria, fungi, insects, termites, marine organisms and, of non-biological harmful agents such as weathering, fire, hygroscopicity (movement) , chemicals, etc. Hence, key directions is to be explained keeping wood away from this kind of harmful agents and using it rantabl and economical.

Learning OutcomesCTPOTOA
Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :
CTPO : Contribution to programme outcomes, TOA :Type of assessment (1: written exam, 2: Oral exam, 3: Homework assignment, 4: Laboratory exercise/exam, 5: Seminar / presentation, 6: Term paper), LO : Learning Outcome

Contents of the Course
Wood microbiology: Bacteria, bacterial damage in wood, effect of bacterial damage on wood properties. Fungi, morphologic and physiological features of fungi, fungal ecology. Decay due to fungi. Macroscopic and microscopic features of white, brown and soft rots. Effect of decay on wood properties. Fungal and chemical stains. Sapstain and its effect on wood. Mold and its effect on wood. Classification of fungi. Recognition of some important fungi degrade softwoods and hardwoods. Fungi appear in miscellaneous wood raw materials after harvesting and possibilities preventing their damages. Animal harmful factors: morphologic and physiological features of insects, termites and marine borers. Ecology of animal harmful factors. Recognition of some important insects, termites and marine borers damage softwoods and hardwoods. Insects appear in miscellaneous wood raw materials after harvesting and possibilities preventing their damages.
