The aim of the course:
The course aims to provide the students with a general knowledge on interaction between the organism and environmental condition, biological oceanographic process in the marine environment.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :

LO - 2 : Understand the factor affected the primary production in the ocean
LO - 3 : Comment on the function of the organisms living in the bentic and pelagic environment

Contents of the Course
Introduction to biological oceanography, basic environmental factors in marine environment, palagic and bentic ecosystems, phytoplanktonic group in the sea, Primary productivity and basic photosynthetic process. Zooplanktonic organisms mero and holoplankton in the sea. Zooplankton phytoplankton relation in pelagic system. Temporal and spatial changes in productivity in the world ocean. Human impact on marine environment

 Week 1Introduction to biological oceanography, terrastial versus marine habitat, Basic eclogical terms
 Week 2Abiotic environment, solar radiation, light and ecological zones, effect of the light on living organisms.
 Week 3Temperature, surface and vertical distribution of temperature, effect of the temperature on living organisms. Salinity, surface and vertical distribution of salinity, effect of the salinity on living organisms.
 Week 4The distribution of the density, hydrostatic pressure in marine environments and the their effects on living organisms.
 Week 5Introduction to freshwater ecosystem, classification of lakes, stratification of lake, bentic zone in lake
 Week 6Practice on ship (CYD. navigation, water sampling, sampling equipments used for plankton and bentic organisms and practice on their use).
 Week 7Phytoplanktonic groups
 Week 8Material cycle, nutients, nitrojen, phosphate and silicon and carbon cycle.
 Week 9Mid-term exam
 Week 10Nutrients and fitoplankton population growth, measuring of growth, physical control of primary production
 Week 11Zooplanktonic groups, holoplankton, meroplankton and ichtyoplankton.
 Week 12Vertical distribution and vertical migration of zooplankton in oceans and marine environment
 Week 13Zoogeography of the holoplankton, pachness, community structure of zoolankon long tern changeas in zooplankton community. Food web, food chain and secondary production.
 Week 14Microbial loop, secondary production and measurement of secondary production
 Week 15Fisheries and oceanography, human impacts to marine biota
 Week 16Final exam
