Contents of the Course
The course covers the interaction between society and space since the early human settlements so far. Starting from the hunger-gatherer communities, the course questions the mutual interaction between social change and produced-used-transformed space following a historical path. After the general explanations of early sociologists, urban sociology theories are studied. Subsequent to these abstract and general theoretical inquiry, emergence of Turkish urban society is discussed with special attention to migration and gecekondu (a sort of squatter) housing processes. Finally, a group discussion is held with reference to actual urban problems such as segregation, fragmentation, globalization, localization, branding cites, modern - post-modern societies).
