SBP3017 | GIS APPLICATIONS IN PLANNING | 2+0+0 | ECTS:4 | Year / Semester | Fall Semester | Level of Course | First Cycle | Status | Elective | Department | DEPARTMENT of URBAN and REGIONAL PLANNING | Prerequisites and co-requisites | None | Mode of Delivery | | Contact Hours | 14 weeks - 2 hours of lectures per week | Lecturer | Doç. Dr. Derya MUMCU KÜÇÜKER | Co-Lecturer | other related department lecturers | Language of instruction | Turkish | Professional practise ( internship ) | None | | The aim of the course: | The objectives of this course include introducing the use of GIS as a supporting tool in decision making in the field of urban and regional planning (spatial decision support system) and its applications in a variety of planning related fields, as well as the process of practicing a GIS project on a related planning problem starting from problem definition up to its resolution. In addition, in the context of illustrating above mentioned applications, this course aims informing the students about the GIS practices of national and international institutions and the works that are being carried out in establishing Turkish National GIS. |
Learning Outcomes | CTPO | TOA | Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to : | | | LO - 1 : | be acquainted with GIS applications that support decision making process in urban and regional planning and discuss their uses based on sample applications. | 12,17,19 | 1,4, | LO - 2 : | practice the basic processes of a planning problem starting from problem definition up to its resolution in GIS medium using real data in the context of the applications that they learned. | 12,17,19 | 1,4, | LO - 3 : | implement a GIS project concerning an urban problem which is constructed on their own initiatives. | 12,17,19 | 1,4, | LO - 4 : | gain experience in resolving problems that they encounter during the implementation of a planning related GIS project. | 12,17,19 | 1,4, | CTPO : Contribution to programme outcomes, TOA :Type of assessment (1: written exam, 2: Oral exam, 3: Homework assignment, 4: Laboratory exercise/exam, 5: Seminar / presentation, 6: Term paper), LO : Learning Outcome | |
Interactive discussions on sample GIS applications within the context of their potential to be used as a decision support tool for planning which include applications on environment, ecology, and natural resources; mining, geosciences, risk and disasters; rural resources, urban design, culture and tourism, 3D GIS; EIA, environmental monitoring and pollution; transportation planning and spatial interaction models; infrastructure and energy; community health, civil protection, security and crime mapping; real time monitoring/tracking, web-based interactive maps; local and central administrative services, and works on Turkish National GIS. Application of a GIS-based project to carry out a planning study on one of these subjects which include processes of problem and goal definition, database construction, analyses, synthesis and results presentation.
