The aim of the course:
Understanding the integrated relationship between sustainability, environment, and planning and the responsibility of planner and planning process in protection of natural values, and acquaint students with principles and methods of sustainable planning.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :
LO - 1 : Compare the sustainability within such contexts as policies and indicators in the world, Europe and Türkiye4,7,101,5,6,
LO - 2 : Comprehend the importance of ecosystem and ecology from the planning perspective, and learn the measures of how the natural cycles can be protected4,7,101,5,6,
LO - 3 : Comprehend the role of important ecosystems/habitats in planning and integrate the limiting activities for the consumption of nonrenewable energy resources 4,7,101,5,6,
LO - 4 : Perceive the spatial context of sustainable planning at different scales with examples and with this aim will be able to produce solutions in planning activities 4,7,101,5,6,
LO - 5 : Evaluate planning and environment legislation in terms of sustainability principles 4,7,101,5,6,

Contents of the Course
Sustainability concept, different approaches and policies, its scales and indicators, concepts of ecology and ecosystem, climate change-ecosystem relations and degradation of the planet earth, ecological footprint-biocapacity, sustainability and its relation to consumption patterns, energy resources and use, international conventions on environment, conservation statuses, related NGOs, sustainable economy and settlements

 Week 2Sustainability concept in a generic context; the differences between economic and ecologic perspectives, its relation to population and urbanization
 Week 3Ecology and ecosystem concepts, matter cycles, degradation of planet earth-reasons and impact of climate change and water scarcity
 Week 4Ecosystem types (marine, coastal, fresh water, terrestrial) and their states, degradation of planet earth-ecosystems and biological structure
 Week 5Definition of sustainability, its scales, different policy approaches, sustainability in the world, Europe and Türkiye, its indicators and measurability
 Week 6Consumption patterns and its impacts (1)
 Week 7Sustainability and energy, energy from fossil and renewable resources, their consumption, energy policies, infrastructures and impacts from a comparative perspective
 Week 8IUCN and its members, conservation statuses, conventions related to environment, ecologic footprint and biocapacity concepts, overshoot day and ecological debt and different scenarios, environmental NGO's and their works

 Week 10Impacts of technical and energy infrastructure and mining on ecosystems
