The aim of the course:
Provide students with a working knowledge of how to read phase diagrams and use them to solve problems involving alloy and process design

Contents of the Course
Thermodynamic and equilibrium. One-component systems, Phase rule, Clasius-Clapeyron equation. Two-component systems; definition of alloy and solid solutions, binary systems including continuous solid solutions, lever rule. Binary systems including partial solid solutions, eutectic, peritectoic, eutectoid and peritectoid reactions, intermediate compounds and intermediate solid solutions. Solid state reactions, spinodal decomposition. Three component systems without solid solution; methods of representing compositions, the equilibrium crystallisation path in ternary systems containing ternary eutectic and peritectic reactions, congruently and incogruently melting ternary compounds, use of lever rule, alkemedes lines and compatibility triangles.
