The aim of the course:
are to give the fundamentals of soil mechanics to teach the engineering behavior of the soil.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :
LO - 1 : determine index properties, particle-size distribution and consistency properties of soils2,3,51,
LO - 2 : determine shear strength parameters of soils2,3,51,
LO - 3 : determine mechanical properties of soils2,3,51,
LO - 4 : determine compaction parameters of soils2,3,51,
LO - 5 : perform slope stabylity analysis in soils2,3,51,4,
LO - 6 : calculate bearing capacity and settlement of shallow foundation in soils2,3,51,4,

Contents of the Course
Theory: -Soil formation: soil description and classification, particle size distribution, density, moisture content or water content, Atterberg limits. -Effective stress and pore pressure: Total stress, pore pressure below the water table, effective stress, effective stress in the ground, capillary rise above the water table, effective stress above the water table. -Soil compaction and consolidation: Standard proctor test, modified proctor test, Terzaghi theory of one dimensional consolidation, Odometer test, coefficient of consolidation, cv-root time method, cv-log time method, normally consolidated clay, over consolidated clay. -Shear strength: Normal and shear strain, Mohr circle of strain, shear box test, unconfined compression test, Vane test, triaxial test, triaxial unconsolidated undrained test (UU) , triaxial consolidated undrained test (CU) , triaxial consolidated drained test (CD) .
