The first relations between Ottoman State and USA inevitably started with commercial relations. During the first decades of relations USA was working to achieve more and more commercial gains, meanwhile Ottomans to equalize their European enemies continuously hoped to find a friend from over Atlantic Ocean.
At the first months of WW I?s third year, in April 20, 1917 both countries? diplomatic relations has been mutually ruptured yet there never has been a case of state of war. During Paris Peace Conference in which postwar reconstruction has been redesigned, Government of USA and President Wilson were among other who wanted to punish Turks. Admiral Bristol was charged as the highest ranking USA official in Istanbul after the very beginning of Paris Peace Conference. The Admiral rustled to repair both countries? relations, worked to arrange neutrality of American Relief Committees and steer missionaries into their actual working track. Invasion of Izmir city in May 15, 1919 and the beginning of Turkish National Struggle; USA Government partly due to effect of England, preferred to see this process as the rebel of Turkish Nationalists. Turkish victories of later years first made USA to establish distanced diplomacy with Ankara Government and after 1921 this approach was shifted onto controlled diplomacy.
