The aim of the course:
Main aim of this course is to learn basic physical properties of rocks, and to develop relationships between these properties, and then to interpret Earth structure using these properties.

Programme OutcomesCTPOTOA
Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :
PO - 1 : learn physical properties of rocks.1,2,4,51
PO - 2 : develop relationships between physical properties of rocks.1,2,4,5
PO - 3 : interpret Earth structure depending on physical properties of rocks.1,2,4,5
CTPO : Contribution to programme outcomes, TOA :Type of assessment (1: written exam, 2: Oral exam, 3: Homework assignment, 4: Laboratory exercise/exam, 5: Seminar / presentation, 6: Term paper), PO : Learning Outcome

Contents of the Course
Introduction to Rock Physics. Basic units. Rocks of the Earth ? their composition and classification ( Igneous, Metamorphic and Sedimentary Rocks). Pore sapce properties of rocks ( Porosity, permeability and specific internal surfaces). The influence of depth and pressure on permeability. Geometrical properties of grains in rocks. Density of rocks. Magnetic properties of rocks. Natural radioactivity of rocks and radioactive heat generation. Elastic and anelastic properties of rocks and minerals. Seismic Wave attenuation and attenuation mechanisms of rocks. Thermal properties of rocks and minerals. Electrical properties of rocks. Measurements of physical properties of rocks in laboratory and insitu geophysical methods. Some correlations between various physical properties of rocks and their interpretations (correlations between geophysical properties, correlations between geophysical and geotechnical properties, correlations between geophysical and strength properties).
