The aim of the course:
To teach the effects of fires on forest ecosystems.
 
Learning OutcomesCTPOTOA
Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :
LO - 1 : Explain the ecological principles and their relation to fire.3,11
LO - 2 : Describe general terminology, methods and concepts in fire ecology.3,11
LO - 3 : Describe the effects of fires on soil, fuels, vegetation and wildlife and discuss them in terms of cause and effect.3,11
LO - 4 : Describe some plant and animal evolutionary responses to fire, and the tolerance (or intolerance) of plants and animals to fire as an ecological factor.3,11
LO - 5 : Describe the relationship between fires and forest ecosystems and use fires according to their own purposes and needs.3,11

An introduction to fire ecology. Fire and ecosystems. Ecological principles and their relationship to fire. Fire regime and ecological consequences. Fire effects on soil, water and air. Fire effects on wildlife. Fire effects on vegetation. Fires as a natural process in forests.
