The aim of the course:
The course aims to provide the students explain the concept of protected areas, and informed about protected area status, introduce the difficulties while preparing management plans of protected areas in Turkey, illustrate and explicate the management plans prepared with conventional approach to date and introduce new planning approaches used recently while planning protected areas, characterize and quantify standing out forests values in national parks, discussing forest inventory that can be taken out in these areas, advising theoretical knowledge can be reduced forest fires, hurricane and insect damages during the planning process, speaking conservation targets and decision making practically to the students.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :

LO - 2 : Discuss and differentiate the conventional protected areas forest management plans prepared up to date and Ecosystem Based Forest Management Plans prepared according to new approach.3,41,

Contents of the Course
Protected areas concept and history of protection of nature, historical development of protected areas in Turkey, management plans designed for protected areas in the past and their deficient points. New planning approaches used in planning of protected areas recently, standing out forest values or functions in protected areas, management goals, conservation targets, forest form and forest function relationships in protected areas. Forest inventory in protected areas, introducing precautions be applied to forest fires, hurricanes and insect disease. Use of decision making techniques in forest management planning of protected areas

 Week 2Definition of protected areas, the importance of protected areas in our country, the responsible organisations in natural resource protection
 Week 3History of nature protection, historical development of protected areas in Turkey, important international organizastions and their definitions for different statuses of protected areas, the area of protected areas of Turkey considering different statuses.
 Week 4The necessity for designing forest management plans in proteced areas, legislation on this issue in our country, forest management plans designed for protected areas in the past and their deficient points.
 Week 5Recent planning approaches used in planning of protected areas, analyzing the new developed framework for forest management planning of protected areas.
 Week 6Standing out forest values or functions in protected areas and digitizing those forest values, management goals in protected areas and finding optimal solutions in case of conflicting those management goals.
 Week 7Standing out conservation targets, silvicultural goals, analyzing previous forest management plans in terms of thinning and regeneration, forest form and forest function relationships in protected areas.
 Week 8Forest inventory in protected areas.
 Week 9Mid-term exam
 Week 10Questionaries for satisfying participation in protected areas, determining tourism-recreation potential in protected areas.
 Week 11Monitoring spatio-temporal changes in protected areas, analyzing conducted studies for protected areas in our country.
 Week 12Forest management plans designed for protected areas
 Week 13Introducing precautions to be applied for forest fires, hurricanes and insect disease, modelling and integration of forest fires to forest management plans in protected areas.
 Week 14Use of decision making techniques in forest management planning of protected areas
 Week 15Evaluation of model results or outputs with performance indicators, analyzing the agreement between General Diroctorate of Forestry and General Directorate of Nature Protection and Natural Parks.
