The aim of the course:
To teach prevention and control measures for forest protection against biotic and abiotic factors.
 
Learning OutcomesCTPOTOA
Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :
LO - 1 : Explain the importance of forest protection.3,11
LO - 2 : Define the concept of fire ecology and explain its importance in understanding the functioning of fire dependent ecosystems.3,11
LO - 3 : Describe fuel types and associated fire types.3,11
LO - 4 : Define fire behavior and fire management.3,11
LO - 5 : Formulate simple prescriptions for fire control and fire use (prescribed burning) under a given set of weather, fuel and topographical conditions.3,11
LO - 6 : Discuss the grazing, land clearing and illegal cutting problems from technical, managerial, ecological and socio-economical point of view.3,11
LO - 7 : Relate abiotic factors to forest health, identify the damages incurrent by abiotic factors and propose precautionary measures against them.3,11

Contents of the Course
History of forest protection; factors affecting forests; forest fires; fire behavior; fire prevention and suppression; grazing; illegal cuts; damages caused by animals and plants; abiotic factors: acid rains, gases, sand dunes.
