The aim of the course:
It is aimed to provide to students with a clear presentation of the basics of designing and detailing of steel structures and improve their knowledge and skills in steel structures.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :
LO - 1 : Practice structural mechanics knowledge to design steel structural sections, connections and connecting members.1,31
LO - 3 : Gain the ability to follow new technology and to use latest codes to design steel structural elements and the connections under realistic constraints.1,36

Contents of the Course
Introduction to steel structures. Proterties of structural steel and general information about steel design procedures. Loads and load combinations. Allowable Strebgth Design (ASD), Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD), Design of tensian members, design of compression members, design of beams, design of beam columns, Connections and connecting members, bolted and welded connections and related design principles.

 Week 1Introduction, advantages and disadvantages of steel as structural materials, mechanical properties of steel, loads on steel structures, properties of steel secctions.
 Week 2Loads and load combinations. Allowable Strength Design (ASD), Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD)
 Week 3Design of tension members according to ASD and YDKT.
 Week 4Design of tension members, block shear.
 Week 5Design of compression members according to ASD and YDKT.
 Week 6flexural buckling, local buckling, design procedure.
 Week 7Tortional and flexural tortional bukling, buckling of single simetric and nonsymmetric sections.
 Week 8Effective lengths of columns in steel frames.
 Week 9Mid-term exam
 Week 10Design of beams according to ASD and YDKT,compact and noncompact cross sections.
 Week 11Stability of beams, lateral torsional buckling limit state, shear and block shear.
 Week 12Design of Beam columns according to ASD and LRFD.
 Week 13Connections in steel design, bolted and welded connections.
 Week 14Normal and high strength bolts and design of bolted connections according to ASD and LRFD.
 Week 15Welded connections and design of welded connections according to ASD and LRFD.
