The aim of the course:
The purpose of this course is to introduce to the students nearly all of the fundamental concepts of genetics and provide a background in all areas of classic Mendelian genetics. The final goal is for the student who successfully completes this course to be familiar with Mendel's basic postulates and the additional insights that modern genetics has brought to this field, to have sufficient basic knowledge to successfully move on and master advanced topics in genetics. This will be achieved by generating or developing their ability to solve problems and their analitical thinking and teaching how geneticists solve problems and make new discoveries.

Learning OutcomesCTPOTOA
Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :
LO - 1 : understand Mendel's first and second laws and how they relate to cytogenetics1,2,3,4,5,6,71
LO - 2 : predict the outcome of crosses including the use of the Punnett square1,3,4,101, 2
LO - 3 : apply chi square analysis to those predictions1,3,4,101, 2
LO - 4 : design and explain an experiment that uses test crosses to determine genotypes1,3,4,8,101, 2
LO - 5 : compare and contrast incomplete dominance and co-dominance and predict their modes of inheritance1,3,4,101, 2
LO - 6 : describe and explain multiple alleles, multiple loci and multiple effects of a single gene1,3,4,101, 2
LO - 7 : draw and use pedigrees to display and understand the pattern of single gene inheritance as well as predict relatedness1,3,4,101, 2
LO - 8 : draw genetic maps1,3,4,8,101, 2
LO - 9 : solve quantitative genetics questions1,3,4,8,101, 2
CTPO : Contribution to programme outcomes, TOA :Type of assessment (1: written exam, 2: Oral exam, 3: Homework assignment, 4: Laboratory exercise/exam, 5: Seminar / presentation, 6: Term paper), LO : Learning Outcome
