The aim of the course:
To evaluate the subject in planning and urban history with a multidimensional approach and to establish relation between geographical and historical data. They will be able to investigate how social, economic, technologic and politic factors determine the pattern of settlements in Turkey from pre-modern age to modern age.

Contents of the Course
It will be examine that cultural, political and commercial relation between Anatolia and other Mediterranean cultures and transformation of transportation and settlement network in Anatolia from 10th to early 20th century with determinants factors in this process. It is emphasized that the position of city and its role. Urban form determinants, urbanization, state interference on urban space and the transformation of city planning concepts in the time periods will be examined. - The settlements in Anatolia Byzantine Age, from polis to kastron. - The transportation and settlement network between 12th and 14th century. - The Ottoman city in early period: the case of Bursa. - The transportation and settlement network during the Ottoman Imperial Period. - The Ottoman urban administration and urban institution in pre-modern age. - The Spatial organization and urban form characteristics of the Ottoman Anatolian cities. - Transformation the Ottoman urban administration system during the modernization process. - The Ottoman cities in 19th century. - Building activities and urban planning during the late 19th century and early 20th century. - Urban development and city planning in the early Republic Period of Turkey. - Urbanization, urban problems and planning until the year of 1970.
