FOUNDATION & HISTORY  
Urban and Regional Planning Unit in the Department of Architecture opened M.Sc. course in 1996, then was accredidated as Urban and Regional Planning Department in 2003. Started to graduate studies in 2005. The first graduation was in 2009.
QUALIFICATION AWARDED  
The students who have successfully completed all of the thought courses of the programme with 240 ECTS credits and achieved a CGPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 are given Bachelor's Degree in URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING

ADMISSION & REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS  
Recognition of prior learning is at the beginning stage in the Turkish Higher Education System. Karadeniz Technical University and hence the Department of Urban and Regional Planning is no exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the beginning of each term at the University for courses compulsory in the curriculum, such as Foreign Languages and Basic Computing. The students who have completed the learning process for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are exempted from the related course in the curriculum, and this grade is enrolled into the transcript of the student.
OBJECTIVE of THE PROGRAMME  
Urban and Regional Planning Department of Karadeniz Technical University, founded in 2003, is the only planning department in extensive geography of the Black Sea and North-East Anatolia regions. The problems of regions on sustainable development and urbanization as well as the departments' aim of being competitive nationally effect of raising the profile of the academic programme.
RECOGNATION of PRIOR LEARNING  
The "Directive on Recognition of Prior Learning", Senate Decision No. 340 issued on July 28, 2023, has been accepted and entered into force regarding the students registered in all programs of Karadeniz Technical University to determine the principles to be followed for the recognition, crediting, and adaptation of the achievements acquired by the students at non-university institutions.



In this Directive,



- recognition of knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired with special interest through an exemption exam to be substituted as program courses,

- recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio evaluation to be substituted as program courses,

- and the crediting of certificates received from accredited institutions regarding students' special interests are covered.


Announcements of courses included in the scope of recognition of prior learning, applications, and evaluation will be made on the dates specified in the academic calendar.
Recognition of prior learning will offer numerous benefits to our students and employers. For our students, increasing professional development and mobility in the labour market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, providing early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, encouraging learning, and increasing the student's motivation and self-confidence can be counted among the benefits of recognition of prior learning. From the employers' perspectives, it will contribute to satisfying skill or competence deficiencies in the workplace, reducing the time employees spend outside the workplace for training purposes, and thus using resources more efficiently.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS and REGULATIONS  
The degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all the courses in the curriculum including summer practices, with a CGPA of 2.00 out of 4.00.
EXAMINATION, ASSESSMENT and GRADING REGULATIONS  
The examination, assessment and grading regulations have been set up for the university by the University Senate and the Department of Urban and Regional Planning is bound by these regulations. Each course is assessed the mid-term studies (a mid-term exam composed of quizzes, homeworks, assignments) and a final end of -term exam,with contributions of 50% respectively. However, due to characteristics of planning education, in Urban and Regional Planning Studios (course name Project), final assessment of term project contribute 70% to the terms assessment and within term evaluations all together totals 30%. The marking is made out of 100. Grades of 81-100 is assigned a letter grade of AA, 76-80 BA, 70-75 BB, 60-69 CB, 50-59 CC, 45-49 DC, 40-44 DD, 30-39 FD and 0-29 FF. The AA is the highest grade and has a grade credit of 4.00, BA 3.5, BB 3.0, CB 2.5, CC 2.0, DC 1.5, DD 1.0, FD 0.5 and FF 0.0. Grades of AA to CC are pass, DD to FF fail, and DC is conditional pass and requires a CGPA of at least 2.0 for that term. The details given for each course in the programme include the detailed assessment methods together with a description of the second mid-term exam.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS  
The students who have successfully completed all of the courses available in the program (equivalant to 240 ECTS credits) from thought courses delivered within the graduate programme of the department and in related fields, achieved a CGPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and prepared and successfully defended a graduation thesis are given Urban and Regional Planner degree.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILES of GRADUATES  
Graduate is qualified to work as a civil servant in local governments, in various departments of central government and as practicing planners privately or in private sector.

DEPARTMENTAL FACILITIES : 
There are four studios and a seminar hall where M.Sc.courses holds. Also,there are a computer laboratory and a physical environment control laboratory, and a conference hall that all are shared with other members of the faculty. All the units are adequately equipped with computers aided teaching facilities.
