FOUNDATION & HISTORY  
Department of Special Education was established in 1998. It has two teacher education programs: Teachers of Mental Retarded and Teacher of Hearing Impaired Children. Since then, it has been continuing its training and education. The department has been training and educating teacher candidates according to the requirements and regulations from Higher Education Council and Ministry of National Education.
QUALIFICATION AWARDED  
After fulfilling all coursework requirements (Total 240 ECTS) with 2.00 GPA out of 4.00, students earn Bachelor ' s degree as Teachers of Mental Retarded Children.

ADMISSION & REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS  
1 - Admission to this program requires High School Diploma and certain score from the National Entrance Examination (ÖSS) in Turkey
OBJECTIVE of THE PROGRAMME  
The primary aim of Teacher Education Program for Mental Retarded Children is to train teachers who have professional attitudes related to their subject area. The program is also aimed to educate teachers who are capable of following up changes in their subject area and are eager to develop themselves culturally. This program prospects to train teachers who can communicate easily with special needs children by identifying their behavioral and psychological problems, who pursues ethical rules, and who can use technology. Thus in this program, it is valued that the teachers should be developing competence in respectful and sensitive to individual differences with effective communication skills.
RECOGNATION of PRIOR LEARNING  
The "Directive on Recognition of Prior Learning", Senate Decision No. 340 issued on July 28, 2023, has been accepted and entered into force regarding the students registered in all programs of Karadeniz Technical University to determine the principles to be followed for the recognition, crediting, and adaptation of the achievements acquired by the students at non-university institutions.

In this Directive,

- recognition of knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired with special interest through an exemption exam to be substituted as program courses,
- recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio evaluation to be substituted as program courses,
- and the crediting of certificates received from accredited institutions regarding students' special interests are covered.

Announcements of courses included in the scope of recognition of prior learning, applications, and evaluation will be made on the dates specified in the academic calendar. Recognition of prior learning will offer numerous benefits to our students and employers. For our students, increasing professional development and mobility in the labour market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, providing early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, encouraging learning, and increasing the student's motivation and self-confidence can be counted among the benefits of recognition of prior learning. From the employers' perspectives, it will contribute to satisfying skill or competence deficiencies in the workplace, reducing the time employees spend outside the workplace for training purposes, and thus using resources more efficiently.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS and REGULATIONS  
To be able to secure the bachelor's degree in the field of Special Education (and thus title Teacher of Mental Retarded Children) the students are required to (a) have passed all courses in the curiculum with a grade of at least DC form the, (b) have achieved a cumulative gross point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00
EXAMINATION, ASSESSMENT and GRADING REGULATIONS  
The examination, assessment and grading regulations have been set up for the university by the University Senate and the Department of Special Education is bound by these regulations. Each course is assessed via a midterm exam, a second mid-term exam composed of quizzes, homeworks and assignments, and a final end-of-term exam, with contributions of 30%, 20% and 50% respectively. The marking is made out of 100. Grades of 81-100 is assigned a letter grade of AA, 76-80 BA, 70-75 BB, 60-69 CB, 50-59 CC, 45-49 DC, 40-44 DD, 30-39 FD and 0-29 FF. The AA is the highest grade and has a grade credit of 4.00, BA 3.5, BB 3.0, CB 2.5, CC 2.0, DC 1.5, DD 1.0, FD 0.5 and FF 0.0. Grades of AA to CC are pass, DD to FF fail, and DC is conditional pass and requires a CGPA of at least 2.0 for that term. The details given for each course in the programme include the detailed assessment methods together with a description of the second mid-term exam.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS  
The graduation requirements for the Department of Special education are the same as the qualification requirements and regulations. There is no additional requirement to secure the Bachelor's Degree provided that the students have passed all the courses in the curriculum with at least a DC grade, had a cumulative gross point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00, After fulfilling all coursework requirements (Total 240 ECTS) with minimum 2.00 GPA (Grade Point Average) out of 4.00, students earn Bachelor ' s degree as Teachers of Mental Retarded Children.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILES of GRADUATES  
They are placed to Public and private schools, Rehabilitation Centers, Social Service Institutes, Counseling and Guidance Research Centers, Hospitals, or Early Childhood Education Institutes.
ACCESS to FURTHER STUDIES  
The students who have successfully graduated from the department may apply to post graduate programmes in Special Education Area, Educational Policy, and Psychological Services in Education.

DEPARTMENTAL FACILITIES : 
The department is located in Fatih School of Education within F Building and it has adequate physical environment with its technological classrooms and area laboratories. It is sharing the building with Distant Education Center. There are educational protocols for students ' placements with Special Education Schools, Rehabilitation Centers and classroom of Special needs children. In the department, there is Special Education Student Club formed by programs? students for community services to special needed children and their families. The students in the department can use all campus facilities such as dormitories, cafeterias, social and sports centers. The department graduates can be employed right after their graduation.
