FOUNDATION & HISTORY
The Department of Biophysics was established in 2008 within the KTU Faculty of Medicine. Graduate programme of Biophysics started in 2021.
QUALIFICATION AWARDED
Master's Degree
LEVEL of QUALIFICATION:
Qualifications Frameworks in the European Higher Education Area (QF-EHEA), Level 2
European Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning (EQF-LLL), Level 7
MODE of STUDY
Full Time
ADMISSION & REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
- To graduate from a department or faculty that meets the "Graduation Prerequisites for Application to Graduate Programs" determined by the Board of Health Sciences Institute and approved by the Karadeniz Technical University Senate.
- Having ALES (Quantitative/Equally Weighted) and a Foreign Language base score determined by the Board of Health Sciences Institute and approved by the KTU Senate (Application and Entry Requirements for the Graduate Programs of the KTU Health Sciences Institute).
OBJECTIVE of THE PROGRAMME
Physics is an inclusive science that deals with the behavior of all existing matter and explains these behaviors. Living systems also primarily obey the laws of physics, and like other substances, matter-energy interactions are determined by physical principles. In the Biophysics Graduate Program, the relationship between topics such as thermodynamics, electricity, and electromagnetism with living systems will be examined. The physical rules of events occurring at the molecule, cell and system level in the basic processes in living systems will be covered; these events will be associated with the principles of physics. Students will be informed about the subjects like imaging techniques used in modern medical approaches, radiobiology, laser, etc.
In addition, electrophysiological acquisition, signal analysis, molecular methods will be taught in practice. Students in the program are expected to actively participate in some of the ongoing studies in the department.
RECOGNATION of PRIOR LEARNING
The "Directive on Recognition of Prior Learning", Senate Decision No. 340 issued on July 28, 2023, has been accepted and entered into force regarding the students registered in all programs of Karadeniz Technical University to determine the principles to be followed for the recognition, crediting, and adaptation of the achievements acquired by the students at non-university institutions.

In this Directive,

- recognition of knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired with special interest through an exemption exam to be substituted as program courses,
- recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio evaluation to be substituted as program courses,
- and the crediting of certificates received from accredited institutions regarding students' special interests are covered.

Announcements of courses included in the scope of recognition of prior learning, applications, and evaluation will be made on the dates specified in the academic calendar. Recognition of prior learning will offer numerous benefits to our students and employers. For our students, increasing professional development and mobility in the labour market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, providing early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, encouraging learning, and increasing the student's motivation and self-confidence can be counted among the benefits of recognition of prior learning. From the employers' perspectives, it will contribute to satisfying skill or competence deficiencies in the workplace, reducing the time employees spend outside the workplace for training purposes, and thus using resources more efficiently.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS and REGULATIONS
The study period of the program is four semesters and can be extended to a maximum of six semesters. By the end of the fourth semester at the latest, the student must have successfully completed minimum seven courses stated in the curriculum including compulsory and elective courses, one of which must be in English, corresponding to at least 21 credits (120 ECTS credits) in total as well as the "Seminar" course and the "Scientific Research and Publication Ethics" course (non-credit). Also, at the end of the sixth semester at the latest, the thesis study must be completed, and the student must be accepted successful in the thesis defense examination.
KTU Graduate Education Regulations
EXAMINATION, ASSESSMENT and GRADING REGULATIONS
Students are subjected to a midterm exam, midterm study (project, seminar, quiz, homework or a second midterm exam) and final exam for each course. The contribution of the midterm exam to the success grade of the course is 30%, the contribution of the work during the semester is 20% and the contribution of the final exam is 50%. All exams are evaluated over 100 points. In order for a student to be considered successful in a course, he must have received at least a letter grade of "CC" as a semester-end grade from that course.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
To graduate from the master's degree program, it is necessary to successfully complete;
- minimum seven courses including compulsory courses, one of which must be in English, corresponding to at least 21 credits (120 ECTS credits) in total as well as the "Seminar" course and the "Scientific Research and Publication Ethics" course (non-credit) by the end of the fourth semester and
- the thesis study by the end of the sixth semester.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILES of GRADUATES
The Biophysics master's program prepares its graduates for doctoral education in Biophysics and related sciences. Graduates can also work as lecturers in higher education schools.

DEPARTMENTAL FACILITIES :
Basically, neuroscience studies are carried out in the Biophysics US laboratory. Two comprehensive electrophysiological data acquisition systems are operational in the laboratory. Electrophysiological recordings from a neuron and a brain region are obtained and analyzed. In addition, experimental EEG recordings are also included in research. Excitability, neurotrofin effects and experimental epilepsy models are studied in the laboratory.
In addition, studies are supported by biochemical and molecular biology techniques and animal behavioral experiments when necessary.
