FOUNDATION & HISTORY
Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics was established in 17.08.2012at the Faculty of Science of Karadeniz Technical University. In the following years, the requirements of technical infrastructure and prestigious faculty were overcomed and lisans education was commenced with 2017 Fall semester. With this comprehensive and contemporary program, it is enthusiastically aimed to educate molecular biologists who have different perspectives to let them lead their career and future.
QUALIFICATION AWARDED
Students who have successfully completed all of program courses (total 240 ECTS credits) are qualified as Molecular Biology and Genetics graduates.
LEVEL of QUALIFICATION:
First Cycle Degree
MODE of STUDY
Full Time
ADMISSION & REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
1- High school and equalized school diploma
2- Adequate points from Higher Education Transition Exam (YGS) and Undergraduate Placement Exam (LYS)
OBJECTIVE of THE PROGRAMME
The main objective of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics is to graduate Molecular Biologists equipped with the full of knowledge and skills to teach, explain and apply the basic principles of molecular biology, make current decisions related to life experiences and carry all the authority and responsibilities provided by laws.
Based on its vision, the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics conducts internal and external activities and duties through senior dean and rectorate institutions. The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics educates students so that they can find jobs in wherever molecular biology is used.
The stakeholders for which the Molecular Biology and Genetics Department wants to interact and interact can be summarized as TUBITAK (Turkish Research Council), SPD (State Personal Department), various institutions related to Ministries, Universities, Research Institutions, Institutes, Graduates.
The department having distinguished faculty members employs all of its amenities to educate its students in the best way possible. The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, which integrates recent findings from various scientific disciplines, offers students the opportunity to pursue different sciences that lead to the emergence of molecular biology discipline including courses in physics, chemistry and mathematics. In addition, the department has a high potential for integrative research initiatives through KTU-BAP, SPD, TUBITAK and other outsourced supports. Using these available values, it provides a positive atmosphere for students to learn, research, and get experienced in life. In this way, it provides countless opportunities to eager and successful students to participate in research enterprises in the existing support and guidance of active researchers in modern research laboratories and foster them for further career development and research initiatives.
RECOGNATION of PRIOR LEARNING
The "Directive on Recognition of Prior Learning", Senate Decision No. 340 issued on July 28, 2023, has been accepted and entered into force regarding the students registered in all programs of Karadeniz Technical University to determine the principles to be followed for the recognition, crediting, and adaptation of the achievements acquired by the students at non-university institutions.

In this Directive,

- recognition of knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired with special interest through an exemption exam to be substituted as program courses,

- recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio evaluation to be substituted as program courses,

- and the crediting of certificates received from accredited institutions regarding students' special interests are covered.

Announcements of courses included in the scope of recognition of prior learning, applications, and evaluation will be made on the dates specified in the academic calendar.
Recognition of prior learning will offer numerous benefits to our students and employers. For our students, increasing professional development and mobility in the labour market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, providing early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, encouraging learning, and increasing the student's motivation and self-confidence can be counted among the benefits of recognition of prior learning. From the employers' perspectives, it will contribute to satisfying skill or competence deficiencies in the workplace, reducing the time employees spend outside the workplace for training purposes, and thus using resources more efficiently.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS and REGULATIONS
To obtain a Bachelor's Degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics, students must:
1- complete courses correspondıng to 240 ECTS credit,
2- Having achieved a weighted average of at least 2.0 out of 4,0 and
3- To have internship experience for a certain time period also identified in the curriculum.
EXAMINATION, ASSESSMENT and GRADING REGULATIONS
The degree of success is calculated on the basis of the grades obtained from the final exam and the grades in the semester (midterm exams/exams, field works, practice, homework, presentation, project, internship, workshop, seminar, laboratory and similar studies). The contribution of the semester work to the course grade is 50%. The contribution of the final exam to the letter grade is 50%. There is a requirement to take at least 45 points out of 100 in the final exam.
Students who take one of the letter grades AA, BA, BB, CB and CC are deemed to have completed that course. In addition, students with a weighted grade average of 2.00 and above are considered as successful for thier DC letter graded courses. Students who receive one of DD, FD and FF letter grades are considered as failed for that course. Students not having a grade average of at least 2,00 at the end of a semester are considered unsuccessful for the courses that they have the DC letter grade.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Students who have successfully completed all of the courses in the program (total 240 ECTS credits) with at least a DC grade, have achieved a GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.00 and successfully completed their internships are eligible to graduate from the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILES of GRADUATES
Some of graduates can continue their career development as academicians in different institutes and research departments of universities such as science, medicine, agriculture, pharmacy and veterinary. On the other hand, graduates can also be employed within commercial companies or within national research laboratories, ministries, research institutes and state trading enterprises.
ACCESS to FURTHER STUDIES
Graduates who have successfully completed their undergraduate program with a remarkable GPA can also get involved into postgraduate (master's and doctoral) research programs when they qualified for ALES exam and have sufficient knowledge of English language.
