FOUNDATION & HISTORY  
The history of Secondary Social Science Education Department goes back to 1982. At that time, the department called Social Science Education Department which consisted of history and geography teacher education programmes. In 1998, there were important changes on teacher education in Turkey which was a radical reform for pre-service teacher education. According to the new system, students are required to take a three and a half or four year course of undergraduate education in the curriculum subject, and after this period, they have one and a half years of postgraduate education in their teaching subject. In 1998, the name of the department was chaged and since then it has been called Secondary Social Science Education Department which consists of History Education, Geography Education and Turkish Language and Literature Education's master programmes with thesis and without thesis.
QUALIFICATION AWARDED  
Students that succesfully complete the program are awarded with a master degree diploma in Turkish Language and Literacy .

OBJECTIVE of THE PROGRAMME  
The main motivation behind this program is to train experts in Turkish Language and Literacy. In order to meet this goal the program, students are given crucial knowledge and skills in their field.
RECOGNATION of PRIOR LEARNING  
The "Directive on Recognition of Prior Learning", Senate Decision No. 340 issued on July 28, 2023, has been accepted and entered into force regarding the students registered in all programs of Karadeniz Technical University to determine the principles to be followed for the recognition, crediting, and adaptation of the achievements acquired by the students at non-university institutions.

In this Directive,

- recognition of knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired with special interest through an exemption exam to be substituted as program courses,
- recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio evaluation to be substituted as program courses,
- and the crediting of certificates received from accredited institutions regarding students' special interests are covered.

Announcements of courses included in the scope of recognition of prior learning, applications, and evaluation will be made on the dates specified in the academic calendar. Recognition of prior learning will offer numerous benefits to our students and employers. For our students, increasing professional development and mobility in the labour market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, providing early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, encouraging learning, and increasing the student's motivation and self-confidence can be counted among the benefits of recognition of prior learning. From the employers' perspectives, it will contribute to satisfying skill or competence deficiencies in the workplace, reducing the time employees spend outside the workplace for training purposes, and thus using resources more efficiently.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS and REGULATIONS  
To be able to secure the master degree in Turkish Language and Literacy, the students are required to (a) have passed all courses in the curiculum with a grade of at least CC, (b) have achieved a cumulative gross point average of at least 3.00 out of 4.00, (c) prepared a graduation thesis, submitted and successfully defended with a passing grade.
KTU Graduate Education Regulations
EXAMINATION, ASSESSMENT and GRADING REGULATIONS  
The examination, assessment and grading regulations have been set up for the university by the University Senate and the Department of Department of Secondary Social Science Education is bound by these regulations. Each course is assessed via a midterm exam, a second mid-term exam composed of quizzes, homeworks and assignments, and a final end-of-term exam, with contributions of 30%, 20% and 50% respectively. The marking is made out of 100. Grades of 81-100 is assigned a letter grade of AA (90-100), BA (85-89) BB (80-84), CB (75-79), CC (70-74), DC (60-69), DD (50-59), FD (40-49), FF (0-29). The AA is the highest grade and has a grade credit of 4.00, BA 3.5, BB 3.0, CB 2.5, CC 2.0, DC 1.5, DD 1.0, FD 0.5 and FF 0.0. Grades of AA to CC are pass, DD to FF fail, and DC is conditional pass and requires a CGPA of at least 3.0 for that term. The details given for each course in the programme include the detailed assessment methods together with a description of the second mid-term exam. In addition to these , students should also complete a master thesis and succesfully defend it.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS  
The graduation requirements for Turkish Language and Literacy Education programme are the same as the qualification requirements and regulations. There is no additional requirement to secure the Master provided that the students have passed all the courses in the curriculum with at least a DC grade, had a cumulative gross point average of at least 3.00 out of 4.00, and succesfully complete a thesis and defend it.

Gradueates can become a research assistance in Turkish Language and Literacyor a teacher both private and public schools.

DEPARTMENTAL FACILITIES : 
Secondary Social Sciences Education department has the following resources for each Social Science branch that falls under its domain; A spereate class for each branch that is formed in 'U' style, smart boards, computers, projectors and other such multimedia equipment in every class is present. The department also uses various education methods in its lessons, and while educational activities are being held, attention is being paid to department-environment participation.
