Department of Biology which is the part of Faculty of Arts&Sciences at Karadeniz Technical University was founded in 1974 and started education at 1984. The department has been offering MA and PhD Programme since 1987-1988 academic year. | | QUALIFICATION AWARDED | | The students who have successfully completed a minimum of 21 local credits (equivalant to 60 ECTS credits) from thought courses delivered within the graduate programme of the department and in related fields, achieved a CGPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and prepared and successfully defended a thesis are given Master's Degree in BIOLOGY. | | LEVEL of QUALIFICATION: | | Qualifications Frameworks in the European Higher Education Area (QF-EHEA), Level 2
European Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning (EQF-LLL), Level 7 | | MODE of STUDY | | Full Time | | ADMISSION & REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS | | Application requirements: 1) BSc degree in biology or a related field, 2) A weighted grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.00 out of 4.00, 2) Sufficient ALES score, 3) English proficiency (6 out of 500 / TOEFL). IELTS). Candidates are ranked according to the sum of 55% of the National Academic and Graduate Entrance Exam (ALES) grade and 45% of the undergraduate GPA. Students with an English proficiency certificate can directly start their MSc programs, otherwise they will continue to English preparatory school. | | OBJECTIVE of THE PROGRAMME | | The goals of the department: are to graduate master of biologists who are able to demonstrate the ability of describing, explaining, applying, criticizing, deciding and teaching the basic principles of general biology and five sub-divisions (General Biology, Molecular Biology, Botany, Zoology and Hydrobiology). The related degree provides rights and privileges to practice the profession. It educates student to be employed in the areas where biology is included. Department does its internal and external movements under dean's office and Rectorate. Biology Department's partnerships can be summarized as TUBITAK (Turkish Research Council), DPT (State Planning Agency), employing companies, universities, hospitals, research institutions, govermental institutions, former graduates, biology organizations. Departmental faculty has strong interest in and demonstrated excellence in teaching and research. Department use the state-of-the-art technology in laboratory classes. The Department has an outstanding record of attracting research grands from KTU research funds, TUBITAK and DPT. The Department has a well-developed program for providing research opportunities to graduate students and so foster student to own MSc in Biology and earn their life in academic career. | | RECOGNATION of PRIOR LEARNING | | The "Directive on Recognition of Prior Learning", Senate Decision No. 340 issued on July 28, 2023, has been accepted and entered into force regarding the students registered in all programs of Karadeniz Technical University to determine the principles to be followed for the recognition, crediting, and adaptation of the achievements acquired by the students at non-university institutions.
In this Directive,
- recognition of knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired with special interest through an exemption exam to be substituted as program courses,
- recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio evaluation to be substituted as program courses,
- and the crediting of certificates received from accredited institutions regarding students' special interests are covered.
Announcements of courses included in the scope of recognition of prior learning, applications, and evaluation will be made on the dates specified in the academic calendar.
Recognition of prior learning will offer numerous benefits to our students and employers. For our students, increasing professional development and mobility in the labour market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, providing early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, encouraging learning, and increasing the student's motivation and self-confidence can be counted among the benefits of recognition of prior learning. KTU Graduate Education Regulations | | EXAMINATION, ASSESSMENT and GRADING REGULATIONS | | The examination, assessment and grading regulations have been set up for the university by the University Senate and the Department of Biology is bound by these regulations. Each course is assessed via a midterm exam, a second mid-term exam composed of quizzes, homeworks and assignments, and a final end-of-term exam, with contributions of 30%, 20% and 50% respectively. The marking is made out of 100. Grades of 81-100 is assigned a letter grade of AA, 76-80 BA, 70-75 BB, 60-69 CB, 50-59 CC, 45-49 DC, 40-44 DD, 30-39 FD and 0-29 FF. The AA is the highest grade and has a grade credit of 4.00, BA 3.5, BB 3.0, CB 2.5, CC 2.0, DC 1.5, DD 1.0, FD 0.5 and FF 0.0. Grades of AA to CC are pass, DD to FF fail, and DC is conditional pass and requires a CGPA of at least 2.0 for that term. The details given for each course in the programme include the detailed assessment methods together with a description of the second mid-term exam. Each student must register for each course at the beginning of the each semester and attend at least 70% of the each lecture and 80% of each laboratory work in each semester in order to have the right to take the final exam of each theoretical/laboratory course. The research interests of staff cover a wide spectrum of biological sciences and its applications including general biology, zoology, botany, molecular biology, hydrobiology, and their related subdivisions.
