FOUNDATION & HISTORY  
Compared to the past, the continuously changing role of teachers in teaching-learning process has become more important in the recent years and has become a guide who not only explains the subject matter but also facilitates the learning process. In the context of the recent reform efforts in faculties of education in Turkey, Department of Elementary Mathematics Education was established at KTU, Fatih Faculty of Education in 1995 and has been maintaining its existence within the constitution of Primary Education Department since 1998. Primary Mathematics Education Department gives post graduate level education (master) since 2000.
QUALIFICATION AWARDED  
The students who have successfully completed a minimum of 21 local credits (equivalant to 60 ECTS credits) from thought courses delivered within the graduate programme of the department and in related fields, achieved a CGPA of at least 3.00 out of 4.00 and prepared and successfully defended a thesis are given Master's Degree in ELEMENTARY EDUCATION.

ADMISSION & REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS  
1 - Bachelor's Degree in acceptable fields, 2 - Sufficient score from the National Academic Staff & Graduate Education Exam (ALES), 3 - English proficiency (500 from TOEFL / 6 from IELTS)
OBJECTIVE of THE PROGRAMME  
Department of mathematics education aims to educate qualified individuals, based on contemporary approaches to the master program; aware of contemporary measurement and evaluation approaches, can arrange teaching activities according to the technological developments, can use different teaching methods and strategies in teaching process, can design a research determined to resolve any problem, recognize the scientific research and data analysis method and techniques in research design and can use them in data analysis as active and can follow the research in the field.
RECOGNATION of PRIOR LEARNING  
The "Directive on Recognition of Prior Learning", Senate Decision No. 340 issued on July 28, 2023, has been accepted and entered into force regarding the students registered in all programs of Karadeniz Technical University to determine the principles to be followed for the recognition, crediting, and adaptation of the achievements acquired by the students at non-university institutions.

In this Directive,

- recognition of knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired with special interest through an exemption exam to be substituted as program courses,
- recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio evaluation to be substituted as program courses,
- and the crediting of certificates received from accredited institutions regarding students' special interests are covered.

Announcements of courses included in the scope of recognition of prior learning, applications, and evaluation will be made on the dates specified in the academic calendar. Recognition of prior learning will offer numerous benefits to our students and employers. For our students, increasing professional development and mobility in the labour market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, providing early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, encouraging learning, and increasing the student's motivation and self-confidence can be counted among the benefits of recognition of prior learning. From the employers' perspectives, it will contribute to satisfying skill or competence deficiencies in the workplace, reducing the time employees spend outside the workplace for training purposes, and thus using resources more efficiently.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS and REGULATIONS  
To be able to secure the Master of science degree in the field of Mathematics Education, the students are required to; (a) have passed a total of 21 credits (60 ETCS) courses in the curiculum with a grade of at least CC, (b) have achieved a cumulative gross point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00, (c) prepared a master thesis, submitted and successfully defended with a passing grade.
KTU Graduate Education Regulations
EXAMINATION, ASSESSMENT and GRADING REGULATIONS  
The examination, assessment and grading regulations have been set up for the university by the University Senate and the Department of Elementary Education (Science Education) is bound by these regulations. Each course is assessed via a midterm exam, a second mid-term exam composed of quizzes, homeworks and assignments, and a final end-of-term exam, with contributions of 30%, 20% and 50% respectively. The marking is made out of 100. Grades of 90-100 is assigned a letter grade of AA, 85-89 BA, 80-84 BB, 75-79 CB, 70-74 CC, 60-69 DC, 50-59 DD, 40-49 FD and 0-39 FF. The AA is the highest grade and has a grade credit of 4.00, BA 3.5, BB 3.0, CB 2.5, CC 2.0, DC 1.5, DD 1.0, FD 0.5 and FF 0.0. Grades of AA to CC pass, the rests fail. The details given for each course in the programme include the detailed assessment methods together with a description of the second mid-term exam.

DEPARTMENTAL FACILITIES : 
Our division has a 25-PC computer laboratory, eight classrooms, four of which are equipped with a projector and instructors' PC. The classrooms can accommodate up to 40 students. There is also an amphitheater which can accommodate up to 80 students. Besides, our division has a technology laboratory equipped with a projector, computer, smart board, an episcope, an overhead projector and an audio-visual system. The lectures held in this laboratory aim to make students? teachers competent to use technology effectively in their future professional life.
