The aim of the course:
To give to students necessary knowledge of ship manoeuvring and handling, manoeuvring characteristics of ships in accordance with the STCW 78 (as amended) and national legislation for seafarers, for being unlimited deck officer,chief mate and master.

Contents of the Course
The effects of various deadweights, draughts, trim, speed and under-keel clearance on turning circles and stopping distance. Effect of wind and current on ship handling. Manoeuvring for rescue of a man overboard. Squat and shallow-water and similar effect. Proper procedures for anchoring and mooring. Manoeuvring when approaching a pilot vessel or station with due regard to weather, tide head reach and stopping distance. Handling a ship in rivers, estuaries etc. having regard to the effects of current, wind and restricted water on response to the helm. Berthing and unberthing under various conditions of wind and tide with or without tugs. Anchoring. Lightening at sea. Dry-docking. Management and handling of ships in heavy weather and the use of oil. Determining manoeuvring and engine characteristics. Practical measures to be taken when navigating in ice. The use of and manoeuvring in traffic separation schemes.

 Week 4Indirect factors that can be controlled; turning circle, sideslip (broadside movement) and drift.Indirect factors that can be controlled; trim and list.

 Week 11Ship maneuver in the shallow water. Squat. Ship maneuver in the traffic separation zone.
 Week 12Anchoring and ship to ship cargo operations. Ship maneuver in bad weather conditions.
 Week 13Using rope methods at ship maneuver.
 Week 14Arrival-departure maneuver with tug and without tug. Dedection of stopping distance and turning circle in different situtation.
 Week 15Navigation in ice sea. Navigation in tropical zones.
