The aim of the course:
This course mainly presents operating ground penetrating radar (GPR) systems and gives application fields of GPR. It is aimed to introduce how data acquisition, processing and interpretation of this method are used in this course.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :
LO - 1 : Fundamental electromagnetic theory based on ground penetrating radar method, be able to learn Maxwell equations, related physical properties (magnetic permeability, electrical permittivity).1,3
LO - 2 : Will be learn advatages and disadvantages of ground penetrating radar method.2
LO - 3 : Be able to learn the equipments to collect data by ground radar method, data acquisition, processing and evaluating collected raw data.1,2,5

Contents of the Course
What is ground penetrating radar (GPR) ?History of GPRBasic Electromagnetic Theory, Maxweell EquationsElectromagnetic (EM) Fields from sources. Physical properties (Magnetic permeability, electric permittivity) GPR instrumentation, data acquisition, data processingInterpretation, concepts and pitfallsCase studies (Mining and quarying, geotechnical and environmental forensic and archaeology, buried utilities, structure assessment, military, law enforcement, snow and ice thickness, fractured-cracked system in marble quarries).

 Week 1Definition of georadar method, it's history and theory base on the method. Electromagnetic waves
 Week 2Maxwell's equations. Areas where use of georadar, used equipments.
 Week 3High-frequency electromagnetic waves propagation in the underground where used in GPR.
 Week 4GPR researching design. Selection of measurement parameters. Used antenna types (shielded and unshielded) and measurement kinds on the field.
 Week 5The parameters that effect the GPR signal amplitude. Reflection and refraction coefficients, penetration depth, resolution.
 Week 6Definition of GPR equipment and antennas in Geophysics Department in KTU.
 Week 7Using GPR equipment on KTU campus area and data collection.
 Week 8Mid-term exam
 Week 9Definition of computer programs for evaluating collected data on the field.
 Week 10GPR data processing, required basic data processing steps.
 Week 11Elimination of traces with noise, filtering, energy decay, time gain, etc.
 Week 12Ground penetrating radar data to the data processing steps forward in the implementation of the requirements.
 Week 13Presentation and evaluation of studies in the semester.
 Week 14Investigation of case studies about GPR in the literature.
 Week 15Field studies and interpretation of GPR data obtained from the field. General wiews about the course.
