Introduction to probabilistic and statistical methods. Type of data encountered in geophysics: deterministic and nondeterministic data, periodic and nonperiodic data. Measurements of central tendency: Arithmetical means, median, mod. Measurements of distribution: Standart deviation, standart error, correlations. Histograms: frequency distribution, measurements of shapes (kurtosis and skewness) , statistical moments. Probability and its distribution: factorial, permutation, combination, binomial, poisson and normal (Gaussian) distributions, Statistical tests: Ki-square and Student's- t test. Data fitting: Least square (LS) , polinomal LS, trigonometric fitting. Data smoothing: Simple moving average, wighted moving average, transformation functions, smoothing with tapering. Introduction to Fourier theory. |
