The aim of the course:
Aim of this course is to give the students with general knowledge about probability and statistical methods used in analysis and interpretation of geophysical data.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :

Contents of the Course
Introduction to probabilistic and statistical methods. Type of data encountered in geophysics: deterministic and nondeterministic data, periodic and nonperiodic data. Measurements of central tendency: Arithmetical means, median, mod. Measurements of distribution: Standart deviation, standart error, correlations. Histograms: frequency distribution, measurements of shapes (kurtosis and skewness) , statistical moments. Probability and its distribution: factorial, permutation, combination, binomial, poisson and normal (Gaussian) distributions, Statistical tests: Ki-square and Student's- t test. Data fitting: Least square (LS) , polinomal LS, trigonometric fitting. Data smoothing: Simple moving average, wighted moving average, transformation functions, smoothing with tapering. Introduction to Fourier theory.

 Week 8Introduction to data fitting methods: Possible equations of the curves, Least square method (LSM), application principles and fields
 Week 9Mid-term exam
 Week 10Fitting to linear, polinomial curves and surfaces
 Week 11Fortran and MatLab applications for curve fitting
 Week 12Fitting to trigonometric functions/Fortran and MatLab applications
 Week 13Introduction to data smoothing, simple moving average and its transfer function
 Week 14Tapering by moving average and its transfer functions
 Week 15Succesive usage of the moving average operator and its transfer functions
