The aim of the course:
The course aims to define decorative wood veneer production techniques and wood properties affecting veneer production, to determine wood suitable to decorative veneer, and to compare natural and synthetic veneers.

Decorative wood veneer production, Types of veneer and their usage, Native and exotic wood species suitable to decorative wood veneer, Wood properties affecting veneer production, Selecting veneer quality trees and logs, Production of flitches, veneer cutting methods, storage condition and handling requirements of veneer, Veneer matching techniques, Laminating process and types of glue used for veneering, Sanding and finishing veneered panels, Comparison of natural and synthetic veneers.

 Week 2Native and exotic wood species suitable for veneer production. Wood properties affecting veneer production.Selecting veneer quality trees and logs and production of flitches. Growing defects desired for decorative wood veneering in tree trunk and cutting techniques. Burl, birds eye,pommele, quilted veneer
 Week 3Veneer production methods: Peeling (rotary and half-round peeling), slicing (Plain and quarter slicing) and sawn veneer. Veneer Classification systems: according to cutting direction (straight and figured veneer) and appearance properties of veneer, Reconstituted veneer
 Week 4Drying of decorative veneer, storage conditions, quality in veneers; slicer or peeler checks, drying check, dimensional tolerances of veneer, veneer moisture content,
 Week 5Tools for veneering; rules and straightedges, cutting mats, veneer saw and knives, veneer hammers, Flattening processes of veneers, flattening thecniques for burl veneer.
 Week 6Matching methods for decorative veneering and application techniques, methods and requirements of veneer joining and some problems in veneer jointing (poor joining, discolouration of glue line)
 Week 7Substrates for veneering (particleboard, MDF, plywood, blockboard) and technival requirements for substrate materials.
 Week 8Application of decorative veneers on the substrates surfaces, loose and tight sides of veneers, moisture content of veneers and substrates prior to laminatig.
 Week 9Mid-term exam
 Week 10Types of glue used for veneering (termosetting, termoplastic, elastomers, hot-melt ve epoxy resins), preperation of adhesive and gluing.
 Week 11Problems related to gluing and pressing (glue bleed-through and veneer delamination) and recommendations on the prevention of these problems.
 Week 12Students homework presentation
 Week 13Sanding and finishing veneered panels, selection of coatings, typical problems with finished veneered panels, general recommandation for finishing procedures
 Week 14Complex problems in veneered panels: Causes of veneer checking and ıts prevention, discolouration and staining of veneer, recommendations on the prevention of veneer discolouration.
 Week 15Quality control in veneered product, requirements for quality control process, summary of typical problems in veneered products. Comparison of decorative wood veneer and synthetic veneers
