The aim of the course:
The course aims to define factors affecting quality of plywood and the other veneer based wood panels, to determine the quality of veneer and adhesive used manufacturing of veneer based products

Contents of the Course
Quality and quality control concepts, Cost of quality and poor quality, Factors effective quality in the log storage area and panel production area.Quality control for veneers: Checking thickness, moisture content, and surface roughness of veneer, Quality control for adhesive: Determination of adhesive solid content, gelation time and viscosity. Determination of physical and mechanical properties of plywood.

 Week 2Standardization and basic targets expected standardization, erors and tolerances, Targets and benefits of quality control
 Week 3Plan systems for measurable and unmeasurable properties, plan systems for continuous production, Some statistical techniques used in quality control
 Week 4Review of veneered wood products productions and quality defects, veneer defects and quality control; defects orginated from veneer production or natural wood variability. Determination of students homework subjects
 Week 5Colour defects of wet veneer, thickness variations and measurement of thickness, adjustment of peeling and cutting machines for homogeneous thickness, factors affecting thickness deviation and defects orginated from this defect.
 Week 6Surface roughness of veneers, surface roughness measurement methods and advantages and disadvantages of these methods, control of lathe checks and splits, control of moisture content of dried veneer and used tools, gluability control before gluing.
 Week 7Nondestructive evoluation of veneer quality and applied techniques, quality control of adhesive; solid content, viscosity and gel time measurement, used techniques and tools.
 Week 8Determination of technological properties for veneered wood materials, standards used for this purpose (CEN, EN, ASTM norms), cutting plan for test specimens, determination of physical properties
 Week 9Mid-term exam
 Week 10Shear strength of plywood and other veneered wood product, factors affecting shear strength; veneer moisture content, wettability, extractive content, adhesive type and mixture, ambience conditions
 Week 11Test methods used for shear strength, preperation of test specimens and storage conditions
 Week 12Review the former courses and students homework presantations
 Week 13Bending strength of plywood and other veneered wood products, modulus of elasticity in bending, factors affecting bending properties of veneered wood products and standards
 Week 14Tension and compression strengts of plywood and other veneered wood product, modulus of elastisity in tension strength, some useage area and standard values, factors affecting tension and compression strengts
 Week 15Formaldehyde emission in plywood and other veneered wood product, factors affecting fromaldehyde emission, methods used formaldehyde emission measurement and limit values (E1, E2 Quality norms), limit values accepted European and some other countries for formaldehyde.
