The aim of the course:
It is aimed to give information about surface characteristic properties of wood and surface modification of wood.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :
PO - 1 : define terminology of surface characterization of wood.2
PO - 2 : classify physical/chemical properties of surface modification systems of wood and, to define them in detail2,3
PO - 3 : choose and put into practise the modification techniques required to increase effectiveness in wood surface activation process3,5
PO - 4 : define the methods improving surface structure of wood2,3
PO - 5 : compare the physical/chemical properties of plasma treated and thermo plasticizated wood surfaces.2,3,5
PO - 6 : develop strategy about surface modification and activation . 3,5,7

Contents of the Course
Characterization of wood. Surface oxidation of wood. Functional groups in wood surface. Plasma treatment. Distribution of extractives. Thermo plasticization of wood surface. Etherification of wood. Use of bifunctional molecules. Benzylation. Use of acids and oxidants. Morphologic properties of surface treated wood.
