The aim of the course:
The aim of the course is to teach the basic knowledge about GC analysis, deciding the analysis methods that used for determining the hydrocarbon generation characteristics of the source rocks, evaluating and interpreting the analysis data and concluding from these data.

Programme OutcomesCTPOTOA
Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :
PO - 1 : The students will have basic knowledge about the petroleum source rocks2,31,3
PO - 2 : The students will have ability to determine the formations that have probable source rock characteristics5,10,12,131,3
PO - 3 : The students will have ability to decide analysis methods for probable source rock2,3,9,111,3
PO - 4 : The students will have ability to evaluate the observational and empirical data, to decide whether the source rock generated petroleum or not2,5,12,131,3
CTPO : Contribution to programme outcomes, TOA :Type of assessment (1: written exam, 2: Oral exam, 3: Homework assignment, 4: Laboratory exercise/exam, 5: Seminar / presentation, 6: Term paper), PO : Learning Outcome

Contents of the Course
Identification and construction of the gas chromatography analysis and recorded components in gas chromatogram. Molecular structure and nomenclature of the components recorded in the gas chromatograms. The interpretation of the organic matter type, organic maturity, biological degradation, depositional environment and clinmate by using n-alkane and isoprenoid distribution in the gas chromatorams. The determination of n-alkane charactersitics for the different depositional environments (marine, lacustrine and terrestrial) by using statistical methods.
