The aim of the course:
The main goal of this course is to give knowledge about methods and chemicals that protect wood against the agents damage it. In addition, it is emphasised that mechanisms of wood protection methods and chemicals, classical and new wood preservatives, and test methods.

Concepts of wood protection and wood impregnation technics. Protection principles. History and today situation of wood protection. Wood durability. Permeability of wood. Wood preservatives. Water-borne and oil-borne preservatives. New wood preservatives. Flame reterdants. Preparing timber operations before treatment. Incising. Impregnation methods. Non-pressure processes. Pressure processes. Full-cell and empty-cell methods. Vacuum methods. Sap displacement methods. Solvent recovery methods. New wood protection processes. Test methods. Mykological, entomological, physical and chemical tests. Industrial application pratics. Factors influencing treatability of wood. Anatomical features. Pits. Liquid properties. Treatments that enhance wood hygroscopicity and reduce wood movement. Economical aspects of wood protection.

 Week 4Water borne wood preservatives. New generation wood preservatives.
 Week 5Fire retardant wood preservatives. Preparing timber for treatment.
 Week 6Introduction to impregnation methods; simple treatment methods without pressure.
 Week 7Treatment methods with pressure; full-cell methods.
 Week 8Empty-cell methods, modified empty cell methods.
 Week 9Mid-term exam
 Week 10Practical training in the plant of impregnation.
 Week 11Vacuum methods, other impregnation methods. Test methods; mycological tests.
 Week 12Other test methods. Qualitative (penetration) tests.

 Week 14Factors influencing the effectiveness of preservative system; properties of wood, impregnation solution and techniques.
