The course introduces students to the literary traditions and movements associated with modernism and modern novel through the study of exemplary texts, which is essential for a better understanding and appreciation of Modern English Novel. It thus covers a historical, cultural and literary introduction to modernism along with its main figures,characteristics and related -isms such as James Joyce, Virginia Woolf; stream of consciousness, interior monologue; expressionism, impressionism, symbolism and postmodernism. To this end, the course covers the main representatives of the Modern English Novel with their monumental works such as E. M. Forster's A Passage to India; Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness; Virginia Woolf's To The Lighthouse and James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist As A Young Man. |
