The aim of the course:
The purpose of this course is to promote intellectual growth by strengthening students' abilities to read analytically and creatively, by filing in or reinforcing students' knowledge of the outlines of history, and by making students conversant with many major cultural landmarks and developing their sensitivity to cultural diversity through a critical study of English translations of selected world masterpieces from ancient civilizations through the Renaissance in their social and philosophical contexts.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :
LO - 1 : An ability to analyze a piece of literature from the assigned period and effectively write about it.51,3
LO - 2 : An ability to appreciate literature in its broader social context and thereby garner insights into the human condition through examination of such fundamental relationships as those between man and self, man and society, and man and Nature.31,3
LO - 3 : An appreciation for the historical context of literature, how it affects and reflects the age in which it was written, and how it is linked to broader historical currents in politics, philosophy, psychology, science, art, and music as well as how it resonates within contemporary culture.41,3
