The aim of the course:
Focusing on a thorougly understanding of the nature of concrete in relation with the procedures essential for providing a concrete of required quality and durability qualifications.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :

LO - 3 : Students will be able to cite the general properties of aggregates, mixing water, chemical admixtures and mineral additives necessary for producing concrete with required characteristics.1,2,9,111

Contents of the Course
Classification of construction materials. Cypsum and Limes.Manufacture, composition, and hydration of Portland cement. Structure of hydrated cement paste.Blended Portland cements. Tests on cements. Types of cements produced in Turkey.Classification of aggregates used in concrete and their mechanical and physical properties.Gradation of aggregates. Methods used for obtaining suitable aggregate gradation. Mixing water.Chemical admixtures and their classification along with their properties and uses.Mineral additives and their classification along with their properties and uses.Properties of fresh concrete. Segregation and Bleeding. Workability and its measurment.Properties hardened concrete. Testing of compressive and tensile strength of concrete.Factors affecting the strength of concrete. Behavior of concrete under uniaxial loading.The mechanisms of shrinkage and creep in concrete.Durability of concrete. The factors associated with durability. Permeability of concrete.Proportioning of concrete-Theory and practice.
