The aim of the course:
To inform about the reflection of developing and changing technological possibilities on language studies, to gain knowledge and competence in the use of language structure in computer studies

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :
LO - 1 : learn the relationships between grammar and linguistics and computer science.2,41,
LO - 2 : Recognise the theories, methods and technologies developed in various fields such as artificial intelligence, formal language theory, theoretical linguistics, computer-assisted linguistics and cognitive psychology.4,95,
LO - 3 : acquire the equipment that will contribute to educational activities by creating a language model in computer environment. 5,86,
LO - 4 : gain the knowledge to participate in and contribute to natural language processing studies.41,

Contents of the Course
Basic concepts of language and technology, the relationship between technology and language; artificial intelligence, natural language processing; experimental areas of grammar and linguistics; computer-aided linguistics, big data analysis, the use of language and literature materials in computerised studies and case studies.

 Week 1Introduction of course objectives, content and resources. Determination of students' readiness about the concepts of language, technology, technique, science and knowledge and their relations with each other.
 Week 2Basic concepts: the relationship between language, technology, technique; an overview of the positive and negative aspects of the relationship between language and technology in the light of current developments from the literature.
 Week 3Training on the use of library databases and text creation with computer technologies [in the company of a guest lecturer]
 Week 4Language technology and natural language processing.
 Week 5Natural language processing (NPL), its brief history from 1600s to 2000s, how it is done, what are its challenges and application areas.
 Week 6Application areas of Natural Language Processing: Machine Translation, Spell Checking, Speech Recognition, Text Summarization.
 Week 7Application areas of Natural Language Processing: Named Entity Recognation (NER), Question Answering, Text Classification and Categorization.
 Week 8Natural language processing and Turkish; challenges and requirements in Turkish natural language processing.
 Week 9MID TERM EXAM.
 Week 10Artificial intelligence and the metaverse [accompanied by a guest trainer].
 Week 11New literacy and digital literacy.
 Week 12Sample language technology applications: ALIS, a graphical symbol system developed as an alternative communication tool for Turkish and 3D Virtual Turkish Sign Language Interpreter (TİD3b) [accompanied by a guest trainer].
 Week 13Social Media and Document Analysis System, Turkish sentiment analysis study [accompanied by a guest trainer].
 Week 14Review of the content of the semester, evaluation of course outcomes.
