The aim of the course:
To familiarize the students with the history of Turkey?s external affairs, letting them to construct a base of knowledge that will equip them with a critical mind, questioning some of the givens and cliches that are attributed to the present day Turkish foreign policy. Second goal is to make sure that students can make sense of the major determinants of Turkish foreign policy and prepare themselves for future comparative cases and case studies as students of international relations.

Contents of the Course
This course is the first part of a two semester course surveying the history of Turkish foreign policy. This semester starts with the influence of the Ottoman Empire on the foreign policymaking of modern Turkey and covers the period until 1980s.
