The aim of the course:
This course aims to enable the geology students to utilise computers to solve geological problems and prepare professional reports. The students are expected to learn how to convert geological information acquired from different fields of geology into digital inputs, and to be able draw geological maps, columnar sections, geological sections, and structural diagrams such as rose- and contour diagrams. Creating a variety of XY and XYZ diagrams (including ternary diagrams) and forming custom templates to use for the interpretation of petrographic and geochemical data are also taught.

Learning OutcomesCTPOTOA
Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :
CTPO : Contribution to programme outcomes, TOA :Type of assessment (1: written exam, 2: Oral exam, 3: Homework assignment, 4: Laboratory exercise/exam, 5: Seminar / presentation, 6: Term paper), LO : Learning Outcome

Contents of the Course
An introduction to computing and getting to know basic applications. Word processing: Creation of different types of documents, formatting documents using styles, using equation editor, applying page and section breaks, creating simple and complex headers and footers, inserting end notes to the bottom of pages, creating table of contents and index for a document, finishing of a complete formal document. Excel spread sheet: Basic calculations on a spread sheet, making statistical calculations, creating X-Y charts of different type, producing histograms, copying these diagrams into word processor. Grapher: Basic calculations, basic statistical calculations, producing X-Y symbol or line diagrams from single or multiple files, creating custom templates to plot petrological data, drawing ternary diagrams using a template, producing QAP diagrams, bar charts, creating custom function charts, high-low-close charts, adding second X and Y axis to a chart, changing origins of charts and producing multicharts on a single page. Surfer: Creating 2D and 3D contour maps and block diagrams, calculation of area and volume for a slice in the mapped area.
