The aim of the course:
The aim is the students to learn more about local history studies coming from different background of historical researches. However, in the context of social and economic history studies, it is enriching this area with local history studies done with students.

Contents of the Course
To introduce archival documents, şer?iyye registers and literature of the secondary sources which are necessary to investigate the demographic, political, economic, religious, architectural, artistic and cultural history of a region and city; how these sources can be used in local history researches, and how these studies will contribute to the science of history.

 Week 2The concept and methods of local history will be discussed.
 Week 3The general literature on local history studies (documents, books and articles, theses, articles, trade histories, city guides, maps) will be discussed.
 Week 4The literature on local history studies will continue to be reviewed.
 Week 5Utilizing oral history as a resource in local history studies.
 Week 6Use of folklore in local history studies.
 Week 7The leading examples in the field of local history studies will be examined.
 Week 8Discussion on examples.
 Week 9Midterm Exam.
 Week 10Using of primary sources in local history studies.
 Week 11How to use funds from the Prime Ministry Ottoman Archives (B.O.A.) in local history studies.
 Week 12The Ottoman court records - the Şer’iyye Registers as a sources for local history studies.
 Week 13Studies on sample material from Şer’iyye Registers.
 Week 14Evaluation of the contribution of local history studies to history science.
 Week 15Preparing a example study about local history.
