It looks at different types of wars, their causes and the particular challenges that they present. Are ?new? wars more violent, are some societies more prone to conflict than others, why do we ignore women who commit violence in war, does media reporting affect the trajectory of conflict, is there a responsibility to protect, is it possible to build a meaningful peace in the aftermath of war? These are some of the questions that the module explores. The role of the liberal state is specifically explored through topics such as humanitarian intervention and the R2P and liberal peace-building. Situating these developments within specific case study contexts, this course offers students an advanced insight into war in the 21st century. |
