The aim of the course:
To provide that students have knowledge about land related information systems and GIS.

Contents of the Course
Definition and development of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) . Digital map and spatial information related concepts. Classification of information systems and spatial information systems. GIS functions. Designing and applications of GIS. Data acquiring, managing and displaying techniques. Spatial analysis types and applications. Structural needs and institutionalization of GIS. Importance of GIS in use of information and GIS problems. GIS software and hardware.

 Week 2Concepts of information technology, information, data, system, information systems etc.
 Week 3What is GIS? Main functions and components of GIS. How GIS basically works?
 Week 4Main concepts on geographical entities. Data collection techniques and data quality in GIS.
 Week 5Spatial analysis in GIS. Spatial queries, union, overlay, buffering and a proximity analyses.
 Week 6Network analysis and geometrical manipulations in GIS. Digital elevation systems and 3D analyses.
 Week 7Data output and display process in GIS. Presentation of results and map design factors.
 Week 8System design in GIS. Definition of GIS strategy. Financing GIS projects.
 Week 9Midterm examination.
 Week 10Software and hardware systems in GIS. National and international GIS organizations and activities.
 Week 11GIS applications. The use of GIS in cadastral-based, infrastructure, urban, forestry, business areas.
 Week 12Introduction to Land Information Systems (LIS).
 Week 13Urban Information Systems (UIS). Main functions of UIS.
 Week 14Latest developments in GIS area. Internet GIS applications. Remote sensing and GPS integrations.
