To teach the etiology of the periodontal diseases.

Contents of the Course
Microbiology of periodontal diseases. Plaque formation. Growth dynamics of dental plaque. Physiologic properties of dental plaque. Special bacterial behavior in biofilms. Principle of bacterial transmission. Translocation or cross-infection association of plaque microorganisms with periodontal disease. Microbial specifity of periodontal diseases. Criteria for identification of periodontal pathogens. Microorganisms associated with specific periodontal diseases. Periodontal health. Gingivitis. Chronic periodontitis.Localized aggressive periodontitis. Necrotizing periodontal diseases. Abscesses of the periodontium. The role of dental calculus and other predisposing factors genetic factors associated with periodontal disease. Smoking and periodontal disease. Host modulasyon. Future advances in periodontal microbiology.
