The aim of the course:
To introduce well-known characterization techniques for the identification of materials and for the quality control of the processing of materials.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :
LO - 1 : Define the relationship between the microstructure, composition, and processing of engineering materials. 1,4,121
LO - 2 : Describe different types of light microscopy; able to prepare samples, perform light microscopy and image analysis for determination of microstructure of some engineering materials. 1,4,121
LO - 3 : Explain the various types, function, instrumentation, and electron sample interactions of scanning electron microscopes. 1,4,121
LO - 4 : Describe and perform surface chemical analysis by Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis and X-ray mapping. 1,4,121
LO - 5 : Conduct literature search to find credible information related to the microscopy and surface analysis techniques and presenting them. 1,4,121

Optical Microscopy Sample Preparation, Polishing Methods, Etching Methods, Construction and Properties of Optical Microscopy, Examination of Importance of Macro and Micro Structures (Steels, Cast Irons, Optical Micrography of Non-Ferrous Metals and Alloys, Casting, Structures of Deformation and Annealing, etc) , Quantitative Metalography (Imaging, and Image Processing ) , Grain Size Measurement Methods, Theory and The Use of Scanning Electron Microscopes and Transmission Electron Microscopes, Principles of Analytical Electron Microscopy of SEM and TEM, Generation and Properties of X-Rays, X-Ray Diffraction Technique (XRD) , Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis Techniques of X-Ray (X-Ray Fluorescence Technique (XRF) , Wavelength-dispersive X-ray (WDX) , Introduction to Thermal Analysis Techniques, Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) , Dilatometers.
