To this end, the course aims to explore the Achaemenids' political, religious, and economic history; understand the administrative order they established; and interpret the Greeks' thoughts about Persia and its people. |

The Achaemenid Empire (550?330 BCE) was the largest and oldest Persian empire. The Achaemenid kings were unrivaled rulers of the Near East, occupying an empire that stretched from Greece and Egypt to Afghanistan. This course will focus on the reigns of these rulers, examining their political, sociocultural, and military achievements. Students will evaluate Near Eastern and Greek sources about these reigns. Topics such as the Persian language, life in the provinces, women in Persian society, art and architecture, religion, and military techniques will be examined. The course will use textual and visual materials. |
