The aim of the course:
The aim of this course is to enable students to understand the aesthetic transformations, stylistic diversity, and innovations in poetry and prose within 18th-century Ottoman Turkish Literature in their historical, cultural, and poetic contexts. Students compare major stylistic movements such as Sebk-i Hindî, Hikemî style, Mahallileşme (localization), and the classical style, and develop analytical skills for examining prominent poets and texts of the century. Through close readings of poets such as Nedîm, Enderunlu Fâzıl, Sürûrî, Seyyid Vehbî, Sünbülzâde Vehbî, Hoca Neş?et, Esrar Dede, Fıtnat Hanım, and Koca Ragıp Paşa, students practice textual analysis, stylistic interpretation, and commentary.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :

Contents of the Course
This course covers the literary transformations of the 18th century, the final examples of the mesnevi tradition, major stylistic movements (Sebk-i Hindî, Hikemî style, Mahallileşme, classical style), and biographical anthologies (tezkire literature). Throughout the semester, selected ghazals, mesnevi passages, and prose texts are analyzed through close-reading and commentary. The relationship between the sociocultural atmosphere of the 18th century and literary production is also explored.
